Why do some politicians feel they can talk negatively about the opposition, but ...?

... the opposition is out of line if they talk back negatively about them!? Isn't that like a boxer, whose trying to knock the head off his opponent, getting upset because the opponent is looking to hit him back!? How can someone's attitude and way of thinking be so obtuse?
